GigaPan, No matter where you are...

Once upon a time Remote image capturing with high resolution used for Mars Exploration Rovers, These panoramas early used for getting simulation experience, Now this technology used for exploration of earth code project name Gigapan.

This technology sponsored by CMU (Carnegie Mellon University), Google, NASA, Charmed Labs and DeepLocal.
"We had a lot of crazy ambitions for Gigapan," said Sargent, senior systems scientist for the Global Connection Project at Carnegie Mellon University.

Gigapan stands for gigapixel panorama. It is composed of billions of pixels, the smallest elements of an image displayed on a computer monitor or television screen. The system is a digital camera, set to full zoom, mounted on a robot ability to capture very high-resolution panoramic images. The top left and bottom right corners of the subject to be photographed. The motorized device then automatically moves, taking hundreds of slightly overlapping photos until it captures the entire scene.

The photos are then uploaded to a computer and free software "stitches" them together into one large image say Gigapan. The process can take several hours depending on the size of the image. Once image has processed by the software, may upload to the http://www.gigapan.org/, now your captured image is ready to be explore by the world.

This technology provide assistance to students regarding there studies and research, military forces and all those who willing to discover and educate about things that are inaccessible.
"Our goal is to bring the world closer together by making it possible for anybody to take these panoramas and show them to people across the world," Randy Sargent, chief architect of the project at Carnegie Mellon, said.
